But, one problem which most WordPress users face is deciding whether to use free or premium WordPress themes. A newbie will most probably go for a free theme. But for a large business, premium themes are a much better choice.

Free themes (Advantages)

  • The biggest benefit of free themes, is that they are free. This means, you simply install it on your website and start using it.
  • They are far more compatible with plug-ins. And if the plug-in isn’t supported, simply switch to another theme. It’s not like you invested money on the theme.
  • The themes are really easy to browse, select and install.
If you haven’t used WordPress in the past and do not know much about coding, free themes are great for you since they are simple and easy to customize.

Disadvantages

  • When using a free theme, you don’t get too much support from the developer. They aren’t updated regularly either.
  • There is no assurance or warranty on these themes. If something goes wrong with the theme, there’s nowhere for you to turn.
  • They don’t offer as many features as premium themes.

Premium themes (Advantages)

  • These themes come with the full support of the developer. You will be able to contact them using multiple methods and get any problems fixed in no time.
  • You also get the benefit of regular updates to the theme. This will ensure it remains compatible with WordPress updates and any plug-ins.
  • You also get the benefit of advanced functionality. You get access to the latest features of a theme as well as advanced customization.
  • Security is tighter for premium themes. You will find it easier to protect your website from spammers and hackers.

Disadvantages

  • Paid themes can be quite expensive sometimes. Not everyone will be able to afford these themes.
  • There is no official review process for these themes which means the developers can ignore all of WordPress’ best practices advice.
